Thailand is one of the UK's most popular long-haul destinations — and one of the easiest countries in the world to get cheap mobile data. But buying a local SIM at Suvarnabhumi airport means queuing, passport registration, and swapping out your UK SIM. An eSIM removes all of that.
You buy before you fly, activate when you land, and keep your UK number active for calls and texts the whole time. Thailand has excellent 4G coverage across Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Koh Samui — you will not struggle for signal anywhere tourists go.
Coverage network — Thailand's two main carriers are AIS and DTAC (now True Move H). Both offer strong nationwide coverage. Most eSIM providers connect to one of these. AIS is generally considered the best for coverage outside major cities.
Data allowance — Thailand is a data-heavy destination. Google Maps for tuk-tuk navigation, Grab for taxis, food delivery apps, translation tools — it all adds up. Budget for at least 10GB for a two-week trip. For a month or longer, go unlimited.
Validity — check the eSIM is valid for your full trip length. Some budget plans are 7 or 15 days only.
Speed — most Thailand eSIMs offer 4G LTE. 5G coverage exists in Bangkok but is not yet widespread enough to be a significant factor for travellers.

If you have a dual SIM phone or are going for a month or more, a local SIM is worth considering. For most UK visitors on a standard holiday, an eSIM is simpler and nearly as cheap.
For a typical two-week holiday with Wi-Fi at your hotel in the evenings — 10–15GB covers most people comfortably.
Set it up at home — do not leave it to the airport.
