Refurbished vs new phone — is it worth it in 2026?

June 2026

What is a refurbished phone?

A refurbished phone is a pre-owned device that has been professionally tested, cleaned, repaired if necessary, and approved for resale. It is not the same as second-hand. A reputable refurbisher will run 90+ quality checks, verify battery health, replace any faulty components, securely wipe all data, and back the device with a warranty.

The UK refurbished phone market has matured significantly. According to research published in Meaningful Planet UK, approximately 15% of UK buyers now actively choose refurbished over new — a figure that continues to rise as flagship phones regularly exceed £1,000 new.

The case for buying refurbished

Price. This is the primary reason most people choose refurbished. A refurbished iPhone 15 Pro can be found for around £490-£540 in the UK. The same phone new, if you could still buy it, would cost significantly more. Savings of 30-50% on flagship models are standard. On some older models, the saving reaches 70%.

Environmental impact. Every refurbished phone sold prevents a device from ending up in landfill. The carbon footprint of manufacturing a new smartphone is substantial — choosing refurbished reduces CO2 emissions by approximately 50kg per device and avoids 164kg of raw material extraction, according to environmental analysis cited by Meaningful Planet UK.

Same hardware. A refurbished iPhone 15 Pro contains exactly the same A17 Pro chip, camera system and display as a new one. The hardware does not degrade. What varies is cosmetic condition and battery health — both of which are graded and disclosed by reputable sellers.

Quality has improved dramatically. Professional refurbishers now use automated testing equipment that rivals manufacturer standards. AI-driven quality checks, robotic screen testing, and standardised grading have made the industry far more reliable than it was five years ago.

The case for buying new

Peace of mind. A new phone comes from a sealed box. There is no uncertainty about its history, prior damage, or previous owner.

Latest features. If you specifically need Apple Intelligence, the latest camera improvements, or other features exclusive to the newest model, refurbished may not offer that option at launch.

Longer software support window. A brand new iPhone 17 will receive iOS updates for 5-7 years from launch. A refurbished iPhone 14, purchased today, has already used 2-3 years of that support window.

How refurbishment grading works

UK refurbishers typically grade phones across three or four tiers:

Grade A / Excellent / Like New — minimal to no visible signs of use. Battery health typically 80% or above. Looks very close to new. This is the grade to choose if appearance matters to you.

Grade B / Good — light cosmetic wear such as minor scratches on the body or frame. Fully functional. Battery health typically 80% or above. The best value grade for most buyers.

Grade C / Fair — visible cosmetic wear. Scratches, scuffs, or light marks are normal. Fully functional. Best for buyers who plan to use a case and care primarily about performance.

Faulty / For parts — device has a functional fault. Screen damage, Face ID issues, or battery problems. Only buy this grade if you know what you are getting.

What to check before buying refurbished

Battery health. Most reputable UK refurbishers guarantee 80% battery health or above. Anything below 80% will significantly impact daily usage — the phone may not last a full day. Always confirm the battery health guarantee before buying.

Warranty. A minimum of 12 months is standard from reputable UK retailers. Some offer 24 months. Avoid any seller offering less than 6 months.

Return policy. You should have at least 14 days to return a refurbished phone if it is not as described. UK consumer law provides a 30-day right to reject goods that are not of satisfactory quality.

iCloud and Google lock. For iPhones, confirm the device is not iCloud locked. For Samsung and Android, check for Google account or Samsung account locks. A locked phone is useless.

Whether it is unlocked. An unlocked phone works with any UK network SIM. A locked phone only works with a specific carrier. Always buy unlocked.

Is the saving worth it?

For most people, yes — particularly on mid-range and flagship models where the saving is largest. A refurbished iPhone 14 at £220 versus a new iPhone 16 at over £800 is not the same product, but it handles everyday tasks identically.

The sweet spot is typically buying a phone that is one or two generations behind the latest. In 2026, that means refurbished iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro for Apple buyers, Galaxy S23 or S24 for Samsung.
